Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers
www.militaryatheists.org
The Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers an independent 501(c)3 project of Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs. MAAF is a community support network that connects military members from around the world with each other and with local organizations. In addition to our community services, we take action to educate and train both the military and civilian community about atheism in the military and the issues that face us. Where necessary, MAAF identifies, examines, and responds to insensitive practices that illegally promote religion over non-religion within the military or unethically discriminate against minority religions or differing beliefs. MAAF supports Constitutional State-Church Separation and 1st Amendment rights for all service members. We also coordinate with other national organizations who hold the same values.

Council for Secular Humanism
www.secularhumanism.org/
The mission of the Council for Secular Humanism is to advocate and defend a nonreligious lifestance rooted in science, naturalistic philosophy, and humanist ethics and to serve and support adherents of that lifestance. The Council is North America's leading organization for non-religious people. A not-for-profit educational corporation, the Council supports a wide range of activities to meet the needs of people who find meaning and value in life without looking to a religion. Its activities range from magazine publishing and campaigning on ethical issues to holding conferences and supporting a network of autonomous local groups. Secular humanists reject supernatural and authoritarian beliefs. They affirm that we must take responsibility for our own lives and the communities and world in which we live. Secular humanism emphasizes reason and scientific inquiry, individual freedom and responsibility, human values and compassion, and the need for tolerance and cooperation.

American Humanist Association
www.americanhumanist.org/
The American Humanist Association has stood as the voice of humanism in the United States for over 70 years. We strive to bring about a progressive society where being good without gods is an accepted way to live life. We are accomplishing this through our defense of civil liberties and secular governance, by our outreach to the growing number of people without traditional religious faith, and through a continued refinement and advancement of the humanist worldview. Humanism encompasses a variety of nontheistic views (atheism, agnosticism, rationalism, naturalism, secularism, and so forth) while adding the important element of a comprehensive worldview and set of ethical values---values that are grounded in the philosophy of the Enlightenment, informed by scientific knowledge, and driven by a desire to meet the needs of people in the here and now. We count humanists and other nontheists as the core of our movement but are always willing to work with friends and allies on issues of common concern. The positions we hold and the actions we take are not simply for our own benefit, but for the betterment of all of society and the world in which we live.

The Humanist Society
www.humanist-society.org/
Those who are attracted to a positive, progressive philosophy unencumbered by the rigidity of traditional religions embrace the vibrant lifestance of Humanism. The Humanist Society (HS) gives life to Humanism's rational philosophy by focusing on community and daily living. HS connects you to other Humanists in several ways. Its flagship publication, Humanist Living includes inspirational stories, engaging book reviews, informative articles on raising Humanist children, and other writings about life as a Humanist. Recognizing the important role life occasions play in individual and community life, the Humanist Society's unique ministry prepares Humanist Celebrants to lead ceremonial observances across the nation and worldwide. Celebrants provide millions of Americans an alternative to traditional religious weddings, memorial services, and other life cycle events. Celebration of life is central to a meaningful Humanist philosophy, and Humanist Celebrants officiate significant celebrations vital to Humanist life. HS is also starting to work at the grassroots level by developing the Humanist Community Project, by providing the tools to develop truly Humanist communities. These communities will empower local Humanist groups with the ability to reach out to a greater population of people by providing educational programs, regular communal celebrations, and meaningful social interaction with fellow Humanists.

American Atheists
www.atheists.org/
Since 1963, American Atheists has been the premier organization laboring for the civil liberties of atheists and the total, absolute separation of government and religion. It was born out of a court case begun in 1959 by the Murray family which challenged prayer recitation in the public schools. That case, Murray v. Curlett, was a landmark in American jurisprudence on behalf of our First Amendment rights. It began: "Your petitioners are atheists, and they define their lifestyle as follows. An atheist loves himself and his fellow man instead of a god. An atheist accepts that heaven is something for which we should work now ??? here on earth ??? for all men together to enjoy. An atheist accepts that he can get no help through prayer, but that he must find in himself the inner conviction and strength to meet life, to grapple with it, to subdue it and to enjoy it. An atheist accepts that only in a knowledge of himself and a knowledge of his fellow man can he find the understanding that will help lead to a life of fulfillment." Now in its fourth decade, American Atheists is dedicated to working for the civil rights of atheists, promoting separation of state and church, and providing information about atheism. The organization was founded by Madalyn Murray O'Hair, the noted atheist activist, as the result of her successful battle against mandatory school prayer and Bible recitation.

Secular Coalition for America
www.secular.org/
The Secular Coalition for America is a 501(c)4 advocacy organization whose purpose is to amplify the diverse and growing voice of the nontheistic community in the United States. We are located in Washington, D.C. for ready access to government, activist partners and the media. Our staff lobbies U.S. Congress on issues of special concern to our constituency. Our member organizations are established 501(c)3 nonprofits who serve atheists, agnostics, humanists, freethinkers and other nontheistic Americans. Their purpose in founding the coalition was to formalize a cooperative structure for visible, unified activism to improve the civic situation of citizens with a naturalistic worldview. A number of additional organizations have endorsed our mission statement. While the Coalition was created expressly by and for nontheistic Americans, we also enthusiastically welcome the participation of religious individuals who share our view that freedom of conscience must extend to people of all faiths and of none. Accordingly, our staff works in cooperation with a variety of other organizations and coalitions where common ground exists on specific issues, and our e-mail Action Alert system is open to all who visit our site. The Coalition is not an individual membership organization. To join a national or local group, subscribe to publications, or receive information about atheism, humanism, freethought, the secular student movement, secular children's camps, nontheistic military personnel, humanistic Judaism, or Ethical Culture, please visit the Web sites of our member organizations and those of our endorsing organizations.

Center for Inquiry
www.centerforinquiry.net/
The mission of the Center for Inquiry is to foster a secular society based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values. To oppose and supplant the mythological narratives of the past, and the dogmas of the present, the world needs an institution devoted to promoting science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values. The Center for Inquiry is that institution. At the Center for Inquiry, we believe that evidence-based reasoning, in which humans work together to address common concerns, is critical for modern world civilization. Moreover, unlike many other institutions, we maintain that scientific methods and reasoning should be utilized in examining the claims of both pseudoscience and religion. We reject mysticism and blind faith. No topic should be placed off limits to scrutiny???certainly not fringe science and religion, which have an enormous influence on beliefs and conduct. We also maintain that values are properly the subject of study and discussion as much as empirical claims. The Center for Inquiry studies and promotes human values based on a naturalistic outlook. Ideological doctrine and religious dogma have no more right to dictate our moral norms than they do to influence scientific research. The Center for Inquiry supports research, but our mission activities go far beyond sound scholarship. The Center for Inquiry, and its affiliates, the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and the Council for Secular Humanism, also carry out their work through education, publishing, advocacy, and social services. The Center for Inquiry has established dozens of regional centers and communities, which provide a means of delivering educational programs and services on a local level and provide a venue for like-minded individuals to meet and share experiences. In addition, the Center for Inquiry has affiliates and sponsors programs in many different countries. A secular society ultimately should embrace all of humanity, not just selected countries. In aiming to foster a secular society, we do not seek to abridge the rights of believers. We vigorously object to government support of religion and the use of religious dogma to justify public policy; we do not oppose the free exercise of religion. The secular society we are building is a community of reason and compassion in which the dignity and fundamental rights of all individuals are respected.

Secular Student Alliance
www.secularstudents.org/
The mission of the Secular Student Alliance is to organize, unite, educate, and serve students and student communities that promote the ideals of scientific and critical inquiry, democracy, secularism, and human-based ethics. We envision a future in which nontheistic students are respected voices in public discourse and vital partners in the secular movement's charge against irrationality and dogma. The Secular Student Alliance is a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit. We work to organize and empower nonreligious students around the country. Our primary goal is to foster successful grassroots campus groups which provide a welcoming community for secular students to discuss their views and promote their secular values. Though our office is based in Columbus, Ohio and our affiliated campus groups are predominantly in the United States, we do support affiliates around the world.

Atheists United
www.atheistsunited.org/
Atheists United is a positive atheist community that fosters a supportive environment for its members and a welcoming attitude toward its guests. This community works to improve the status of atheists in the larger society and of atheism in the public discourse by: Promoting separation of government and religion. Educating the public about our philosophy and practices. Serving the public good in ways that are exemplary of our values. Established in 1982 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, tax deductible educational organization, AU is one of the largest freethought organizations in the nation and the largest in the Southern California area. As an affiliate of Atheists Alliance International and the Los Angeles Freethought Federation, AU is committed to consolidating the collective efforts of its members to affect change on a local, national and international level to advance the cause of an atheist community, secular government and religious tolerance. By providing regularly planned events and the opportunity for fellowship, AU hopes to inspire a vibrant and active atheist community. For far too many non-believers, isolation is a common experience as religious belief tends to be an assumed default, discouraging those who might abide by their freedom of conscience to admit their doubt or non-belief. AU provides a welcoming environment where atheists can meet and are encouraged to connect with other non-believers. AU defends the separation of government from religion by encouraging civic engagement and activism among its members to elevate the awareness of secular issues to the general public and consolidate the political will of non-believers. Through education campaigns and public displays, AU seeks to reaffirm the freethought heritage of our secular nation and validate the patriotism of freethinkers who are just as entitled to our nation???s legacy as religious citizens.

Project Reason
www.project-reason.org/
Project Reason is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation devoted to spreading scientific knowledge and secular values in society. Drawing on the talents of the most prominent and creative thinkers across a wide range of disciplines, Project Reason seeks to encourage critical thinking and wise public policy through a variety of interrelated projects. The foundation will convene conferences, produce films, sponsor scientific studies and opinion polls, publish original research, award grants to other charitable organizations, and offer material support to religious dissidents and public intellectuals ??? all with the purpose of eroding the influence of dogmatism, superstition, and bigotry in our world. While the foundation is devoted to fostering critical thinking generally, we believe that religious ideas require a special focus. Both science and the arts are built upon cultures of vigorous self-criticism; religious discourse is not. As a result, religious dogmatism still reigns unchallenged in almost every society on earth???dividing humanity from itself, inflaming conflict, preventing wise public policy, and diverting scarce resources. One of the primary goals of Project Reason is to change this increasingly unhealthy status quo.

The Humanist Institute
www.humanistinstitute.org/about-institute
In August 1982, forty-five humanist leaders gathered at the University of Chicago to form the North American Committee for Humanism. This new alliance was a response to the urgent need to defend humanism against the assaults of its adversaries and to find an effective way to bring the message of humanism to a wider public. At this meeting the committee voted to establish the The Humanist Institute. Since that time, fourteen classes have graduated from the program, providing over a 100 skilled leaders to the humanist community and the larger world.
