Secularism is something near and dear to my heart. I consider myself to be an Atheist/Secular Humanist: “Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism and other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity.”
I graduated in May 2012 from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology and minor in sociology. I also attended Rend Lake College and received two associates of applied science degrees: one in agricultural business, the other in agricultural production and management. In addition to the degrees, I also completed the required hours for an occupational certificate in agriculture production and management.
My passion for youth development and creating change lead me to an education career path. Most recently
I have been an assistant pre-k teacher, AmeriCorps worker as a tutor in a 4th and 5th grade school, and involved in ESL tutoring and mentoring. I'm currently working as an elementary school teacher with Teach For America for the next few years in Detroit, Michigan in addition to pursuing a masters of arts in teaching. After receiving my masters, I will pursue a PhD in a related field.
Within the secular world I have been involved with the National Atheist Party serving as the Anthropology and Sociology Committee Chair as well as the Diversity Council Chairperson, Foundation Beyond Belief as an intern, The Secular Student Alliance and the umbrella group at SIU-C, and am a member of several secular organizations. Additionally, I am the recipient of the 2012 American Atheist Founder’s Scholarship. My next goal/endeavor for the secular world is to start a Camp Quest summer camp for secular youth.
I have been involved with several religious and interfaith groups educating individuals about the Atheist worldview: The Gaia House Interfaith Center, Carbondale Interfaith Council, Religious Freedom USA, and many others.

While I grew up in an Episcopalian household, my perspective shifted after 6 years in the Air Force and time overseas. I discovered secular humanism while having a deeply philosophical discussion with coworkers, and I've been looking forward every step of the way. Apart from that, art and science have always been passions of mine, and to culminate that I finished my Bachelors of Science in Animation in December 2010 from Westwood College. Since then I have worked to expand my digital artwork with purpose. I was introduced to The Secular Segment in 2011 and happily took on a role of graphic designer. I also enjoy doing some artwork for Freethought Dayton in my now home area of Dayton, Ohio, as well as some freelance work on the side.
